WALKING TRAILS

The best line to walk is along the rocky or sandy shoreline track. This track normally is just above the high tide mark, where the sand is highly compact on a sandy beach. Walking in soft sand is very difficult and it is the only time I would recommend a head strap attached to the rucksac. The track on the grass or rock immmediately behind the beach is called the low track and is contrasted with the high track which occurs along the top of the coastal hills to the seaward side. The back track occurs on the landward side of the coastal hills and is the one most frequented by the local Xhosa. We walked along the beach most of the way, it was cooler, more picturesque and reduced contact with the native population.
